Setup
Welcome
This book contains the scenarios of By Your Side, Beyond the Veil—a journey told in chapters, each with its own rules, threats, and emotional shifts. Together, they form a slow descent into something vast, strange, and deeply personal.
Each scenario will guide you step by step, beginning with a prologue and continuing through a mix of gameplay instructions, event cards, and decisions that shape what follows.
If you ever feel unsure what to do next, the offers structure. This book offers direction.
You don’t need to remember everything. The story—and the game—will unfold as you move through it.
Take your time. Stay close. Begin with Scenario 1: .

Prologue
The air in the room feels charged, heavy with anticipation. Moonie’s body lies still at the center of a carefully drawn hexagon, the chalk lines faintly humming. Rosi lights the final candle. Her hands are steady, practiced. She doesn’t look at Jolene as she murmurs the incantation—words once shared, now spoken like tools taken down from storage. Used again, but never comfortably.
Jolene watches her from the corner of her eye. There’s a familiarity there that hurts more than distance ever did. She wants to speak, say something—I’m sorry, I never meant for it to end like that—but the moment has already passed.
Moonie lies unnervingly serene in the dim light. The faint curve of her lips—almost a smile—stirs doubt. Why would she have entered the Planes? She had always resisted their mother’s esoteric practices. Grounded. Practical. Unlike Jolene, who had always looked beyond the veil, even when she shouldn’t have. It doesn’t make sense.
“It’s time,” Rosi says. Jolene nods and closes her eyes, matching her breath to the rhythm of the words. A vibrating hum rises in her chest, spreading outward until it feels as though her entire body is resonating, caught in a current she can neither resist nor escape. The sensation deepens, trembling like a string plucked too hard, and then—snap.
A hollow pop echoes inside her mind as the weight of her body falls away. The room vanishes. The Veil parts. They float now, unbound by physical rules. The astral planes unfold—an infinite reflection of the waking world, familiar shapes warped by flowing energy and bathed in an ethereal glow. Stars drift through the expanse, some dim, others impossibly bright, as if space itself has mingled with human thought.
Jolene feels the pull immediately. Not just of the Planes, but of memories. Of paths once taken together. Shadows stir in the distance. She focuses on her tether—not physical, but a fragile thread of resolve. Thin. Strained. Enough, for now. Even though Rosi avoids looking at Jolene, her presence by her side fills her with comfort, a sense of belonging stronger than she remembered it. They have both come back to a place they never truly escaped.
Moonie is here. Somewhere. And the Planes are listening.
Mark Scenario 1; Prologue as read in the Journal.
Event I: “What do you bring into the Planes?”
Introduces threat manifestations.
You’ve just drawn an Event card. These show up occasionally throughout the game and often bring narrative progression, shifts in pacing, player decisions or additions to the Exploration Deck. Begin by reading the narrative text aloud, then resolve the effect.
Rosi’s voice cuts through the silence. “You remember this place, don’t you?”
Jolene does. She feels it in the current around them—familiar, intimate. But something else has followed them here.
“You just left,” Rosi says.
Jolene feels herself tense. She had her reasons. She could explain. Defend herself. But before she can answer, the feeling takes shape. Something hot and immediate tears through the Astral Planes.
Anger.
Effect
- Place 1 Anger onto the Threshold.
- Shuffle 2 Anger and this Event card into the Exploration Deck.
To learn more about facing manifestations and Threats, see the Rule Reference.
Event II: “What remains”
The anger passes, but the silence it leaves behind feels heavier than before.
Jolene keeps moving. There are things she could say. Reasons. Explanations. None of them feel quite right anymore.
Rosi is still beside her. She hasn’t said anything since.
Something gathers in the current behind them. Not sudden like the anger. This is quieter. Heavier. It clings. Jolene knows the feeling before she sees it.
Guilt.
Effect
- Take 2 Guilt cards from the Archive and place them on top of the Exploration Deck.
Be careful with Threats traveling together. They can cause a Veil Surge (Rule Reference).
Event III: “This might come in handy.”
Introduces Talismans.
Jolene slows her breath. A shape begins to press through the veil, not summoned—remembered.
“I used to keep it near the bed,” she murmurs. “For the dreams.”
Rosi glances down, startled. The old bracelet is back around her wrist, heavy with meaning. Rosi looks up at Jolene, who is now holding a crystal ball. You exchange a quick confused look. Rosi opens her mouth, as if to say something—then closes it and looks away. Neither of you knows how these objects returned. Only that you needed them, and they did.
Effect
- Take Crystal Ball from the Archive and put it in Jolene’s hand.
- Take Rosi’s Bangle from the Archive and put it in Rosi’s hand.
- Place this Event card at the bottom of the Exploration Deck without shuffling. From now on until the end of the scenario the Exploration Deck won’t shuffle.
- (The book said “Event 2”.)
When you play Talismans they are placed next to your character board, and when they are, they are considered equipped (Rule Reference). Cooldown: when a Talisman is rotated, it enters cooldown. Cards in cooldown can’t be used until they are upright again (Rule Reference).
Event IV: “Heartbreaking hope”
Brings a final, familiar yet terrifying Threat to the table.
Rosi senses it first—something light in the static, a shimmer cutting through the folds of the planes. Her steps grow more certain. She knows this feeling. She’s followed it before. Jolene doesn’t move. She feels it differently. Not ahead, but around her. A quiet presence that hums against her ribs. Not sound—something remembered.
Then both of you see it. A silhouette in the distance, still and glowing, like a memory refusing to fade. At first: relief. Then confusion. Then dread.
It looks like her. Feels like her. But the way it reaches—the way it clings, like a song caught in the throat—it’s not Moonie. It’s something left behind. A piece of her mind, made manifest. A yearning too old to name, circling itself, drawing them in.
A longing.
Effect
- Banish this Event card. Place and reveal a Longing (T007) in its place and resolve its reveal effect.
- Mark Scenario 1; Event IV as read in the Journal.
Event V: “Focus”
Introduces chakras and Focus.
Suddenly, something shifts. An unexpected pattern settles into place—subtle, but unmistakable.
The swirling chaos of your surroundings fades into something more structured. Lines of energy arc across the darkness like faint constellations, converging around you, through you.
For a breathless moment, the planes seem to still. A pulse of warmth settles low in your bodies—then rises, spiraling upward like smoke.
Alignment. Like stepping into a rhythm you had always known, but forgotten how to follow.
Effects
Epilogue: “Crossroads of the Veil”
The astral planes stretch endlessly, shifting light and shadow folding into patterns that defy logic. Jolene and Rosi hover between thought and form, tethered to their bodies by threads so faint they are more felt than seen. The chaos of the Veil has calmed, though its whispers still linger at the edges of their minds.
Jolene scans the surreal horizon where the Threshold blurs into the unknown. Her jaw tightens. “She’s not here,” she says at last, the words heavy with fear and resolve.
Rosi drifts closer, her presence steady. “She wouldn’t have gone far—not without something pulling her.” The confidence in her voice almost convinces even herself.
But they both know better. The Planes are unpredictable, and Moonie was never meant to be here.
“We need help,” Jolene admits quietly. “We can’t navigate this alone.” Rosi nods, memories stirring. “The Guides,” she says. “If anyone can help, it’s them.” They drift deeper into the astral planes, light dimming as determination takes hold. They’ve made their choice, found their footing—but the path ahead offers no certainty, only the promise that turning back is no longer an option.

Prologue
The journey into the astral planes feels heavier now, a deliberate glide rather than the hesitant drifting of before. Jolene and Rosi move side by side, their forms shimmering faintly in the ever-shifting light. Neither speaks. The silence isn’t born of calm but of too many words left unsaid.
It was Rosi who had suggested the angels—those elusive mentors who once led them through rituals and secrets that were never fully understood. But their help would come at a cost. It always had. Rosi finally breaks the silence, her voice low and tight. “We’re going to have to go deeper than we’ve ever been, you know that, right?”
Jolene nods, her gaze fixed ahead. “I know,” she says, though her grip on her tether falters momentarily. Her thoughts drift to Harmonie, to her lifeless body lying on the living room floor. Moonie, who had always dismissed her mother’s practices as “fringe nonsense.” Why had she projected herself here? And why couldn’t she find her way back? The questions gnaw at her, unanswered and growing heavier with each moment.
But there’s another weight that lingers—one not born of the astral planes but from years of buried pain. Jolene’s awareness shifts toward Rosi, her expression unreadable. They’ve shared lifetimes of memories together, but they’ve also shared silence—silence that grew after the Karolinska debacle, after Moonie’s birth, after… everything.
Rosi senses the glance and holds it, her voice cutting through the tension. “You’re worried about more than Moonie.”
Jolene hesitates, the tether between them almost vibrating with unspoken tension. “Aren’t you?” she finally asks.
Rosi doesn’t answer. She doesn’t need to. The air grows colder as the astral planes twist into new, darker forms. The Threshold fades behind them, the Veil opening to reveal vast, surreal landscapes—shimmering starscapes interspersed with fragmented memories.
They glide forward, knowing the real danger lies not just in the planes but in what they’ve been running from all along. The entities that haunt the astral are waiting, but so too are the parts of themselves they’ve kept hidden, even from each other.

Event I: This is wrong..
Effect
Event II: The Angels’ Warning
The air around you shifts—not violently, but with the quiet pressure of something vast adjusting its position. Astral currents bend inward, light stretching thin as if the Veil itself is making room. A presence forms, towering over you, Michail.
Not as you remember them exactly—nothing in the Planes ever is. Their voice does not travel through the air; it arrives fully formed, settling between thought and memory. “Aileene. Adlerana. You return.”
Hearing those names again sends a shiver through you—ritual names, long unused, almost forgotten. Jolene drifts forward despite herself.
“We’re looking for someone,” she says. “She shouldn’t be here. She—” Moonie’s name catches in her throat.
Michail’s vast outline fractures for a moment, as if something deeper in the Planes has tugged at their attention. Rosi steps closer, her presence steady but taut.
“You’ve seen her,” she says. Not a plea. A statement.
“Many wander.” “Few arrive by accident.”
Silence settles, heavy and attentive. When Michail speaks again, the pressure deepens.
“Beware.” “It is drawn to those who linger.” “To be seen… is to be marked.”
“There are places in the Planes where presence quiets. Where even observation must strain to take hold. There you will find what you seek.”
The currents dim slightly, stars paling as if reluctant to be noticed. Jolene feels the question rising—What do we do?—but before it can take shape, Michail’s attention shifts, gaze drifting past you into the deeper layers of the Veil.
“I have said what can be said.” Michail does not disappear. Their presence unfolds across the astral flow, stretching and settling into the space ahead. A vast awareness remains anchored there—distant, unfocused—while the rest of them turns elsewhere.
Effect: Unlock the Angel’s Offering
- Place the Angel Michail (A1) face-up at the far end of the Astral Planes.
- Shuffle one additional random Angel into the Exploration Deck.
- Banish this Event card.
- Mark Scenario 2; Event II as read in the Journal.
Event III: Foreboding
A heavy silence settles over the astral currents. The stars flicker out, one by one, like unseen eyes closing—yet the ominous feeling of being watched only grows stronger. You don’t know why, but you know this: you cannot let it find you. The nature of your presence in the Planes has shifted—from searching to hiding.
Effect: A new presence has entered the Planes
- Shuffle Watcher of the Veil I into the Exploration Deck.
- Place this Event card at the bottom of the Exploration Deck.
- Mark Scenario 2; Event III as read in the Journal.
Event IV: To be seen
Final Event.
The pressure breaks. Not suddenly—no rush of air, no release—but like a held breath finally allowed to ease. The weight of attention fades, the sense of being measured loosening its grip. Whatever observed you no longer does.
You have slipped beyond its reach.
The currents carry you onward, slower now, drawing you into a region of the Planes that feels… wrong. Not hostile. Not empty. Rather, so dense that every movement hums with tension, reduced to microscopic vibrations. Your presence—so loud elsewhere—feels muted here, wrapped in layers of something ancient.
This is one of the places Michail spoke of.
At the heart of the density, something waits.
A structure, half-formed and eroded by time, its edges more remembered than real. Symbols trace its surface—older than the Vox, older than any rite you know. Whatever this place once was, it still remembers itself. They both eagerly move towards the center with a fragile hope of catching a glimpse of Moonie around the next corner. Then Rosi slows, instinctively. Jolene feels it too—a resonance low in her chest, steady and unmistakable. Within the structure, embedded in the quiet like a held note, rests a fragment of pale light. A stone. It does not glow. It does not pulse. It simply is—dense, weighty, real in a way the Planes rarely allow.
As you draw closer, the surrounding density deepens. Thought sharpens. The echo of the Watcher’s gaze feels distant here—strained, unable to settle.
Moonie isn’t here. This is not safety. But it is relief.
You understand without being told: whatever role this stone once played, it stands in opposition to the Watcher’s gaze—an answering silence, where observation falters.
Effect
- Mark Scenario 2; Event IV as read in the Journal.
- Proceed to the Epilogue and Reward.
Epilogue: “She didn’t get lost.”
The words settle slowly, their weight undeniable. Jolene exhales, the realization tightening like a knot in her chest.
“She was pulled in.”
No one drifts this far by accident. Not without guidance. Not without pressure. Something brought Moonie here—something that dared her, or worse, forced her to go this far.
The Planes respond to that understanding.
A subtle shift ripples through the Veil. Not a disturbance—an echo. As if a thought, once spoken, has been acknowledged.
Faint. Distant. Almost too fragile to grasp.
Jolene reaches for it instinctively, mind stretching outward. Rosi stiffens beside her, sensing it too. A presence—not Moonie, not entirely—but close enough to stir recognition before it slips away. Gone.
The silence that follows is deeper than before, no longer empty but expectant.
They exchange a glance. No words are needed. Whatever took Moonie is still here. And whatever shields them now will not last forever.
They are not ready. But now, at least, they know what they must prepare for.
This is far from over.

Prologue
The place where you found it does not follow you.
Beyond the fractured structure, the Astral Planes resume their restless motion—currents folding over one another, light scattering, distance losing meaning. But here, within the ruins, the turbulence softens. Broken spans of stone hover where walls once stood. A low dais rises from the floor, worn smooth by time that never quite passed.
This place holds.
For now.
Jolene sits at the edge of the dais, more out of instinct than fatigue. Rosi lowers herself beside her. For the first time since entering the Planes, neither of them feels compelled to move.
Between them rests the stone.
It does not glow. It does not pulse. But the background hum of the Planes dulls around it, as if something here refuses to fully yield.
Rosi watches the ruins. “It won’t stop what’s coming.”
“No,” Jolene replies, turning the stone slowly in her hands. “But it changes how close it can get.”
That is enough.
Rosi exhales. “So what we do still matters.”
Jolene nods, thinking briefly of Moonie—curious, stubborn, certain she could find her way back.
“We can’t keep running,” she says.
Rosi presses her palm to the cold stone. “Then we don’t.”
Beyond the ruins, the currents begin to pull again.
You rise, leaving the quiet behind. The stone’s weight remains with you—not as a shield, but as a reminder.
This time, you are choosing where to stand.
Mark Scenario 3; Prologue as read in the Journal.
Event I
The stone is warm.
Jolene feels it before she understands it—a small, steady heat where nothing physical should be able to rest. The moonstone. She carried it out of the depths without knowing why it mattered, only that letting go felt wrong.
Here, among the ruins, it answers. Pale light gathers in it, slow as a held breath.
“Whatever comes,” Rosi says, watching it, “that’s not nothing.”
Jolene closes her hand around it. The Planes tilt, as if listening. Somewhere far off, something has noticed that the stone is here.
Effects
- The player who has the Moonstone searches their draw deck and discard pile for it and puts it into their hand. Shuffle that draw deck.
- Banish this Event card.
- Mark Scenario 3; Event I as read in the Journal.
Event II
The Astral Planes tense.
Not violently. Not suddenly. But with the quiet resistance of something stretched too far.
A silhouette resolves ahead—vast, incomplete, refusing coherence. No face. No form that holds. Only attention, narrowing.
The Watcher of the Veil.
It does not advance. It does not threaten. It simply occupies the space between where you are and where you intended to go.
Rosi shifts her stance without looking at Jolene. Jolene adjusts her grip on the stone.
You have been seen.
Effects
- Place Watcher of the Veil I at the far end of the Astral Planes.
- Banish this Event card.
Event III
Read when Watcher of the Veil I is defeated (the card says so).
The Watcher recoils as its form fractures—pulled apart by resistance, by force, by refusal.
But it does not retreat.
Instead, the pressure diffuses.
Fragments of its presence peel away, echoing outward through the Planes. Residue gathers. Reflections linger where attention once focused.
Rosi’s breath catches. “It’s not gone.”
“No,” Jolene says. “It’s… everywhere.”
The Watcher withdraws from the forefront, its gaze no longer singular.
But the Planes are no quieter for it.
Effect
Event IV
Read when Watcher of the Veil II is defeated (the card says so).
The echoes collapse.
Not cleanly. Not all at once. The systems holding them strain, then fail, unable to sustain the weight of delegated attention.
The Watcher reasserts itself—not through others, but directly. Reality resists.
The Veil twists violently, orientation unraveling. Paths reverse. What was distant presses close. What you prepared for slips out of reach.
“This isn’t pursuit,” Rosi says, steady despite the chaos.
“No,” Jolene answers. “It’s interference.”
The Watcher’s focus sharpens.
There will be no more intermediaries.
Effect
Event V
Epilogue
The Veil hangs thin, unstable. Rosi exhales slowly. “We can’t go back.”
Jolene nods. “I know.”
Somewhere beyond the fractured currents, Moonie still waits.
And the only way forward now…
…is to walk the Veil itself.
